ALF Article for Unity and Support for Lebanon

12/02/2024

As Lebanon continues to struggle with one of the most challenging periods in its modern history, we, as Lebanese expatriates in the United States, feel a profound sense of responsibility to stand in solidarity with our homeland. The American Lebanese Foundation, being a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering the best possible positive ties between the U.S. and Lebanon, calls on the global community, particularly Lebanese expatriates, to unite in support of our cedar’s country during these difficult times.

Lebanon’s current challenges are multifaceted. The economic crisis, which has driven countless families into poverty, continues to erode the nation’s middle class. The political deadlock has resulted in a governance vacuum at a time when decisive leadership is desperately needed. Moreover, the ongoing social unrest reflects the frustration of a resilient population whose cries for justice, accountability, and reform remain largely unanswered.

For the American Lebanese community, watching these events unfold from afar is both heartbreaking and galvanizing. While distance separates us physically, our emotional and cultural ties to Lebanon remain unbreakable. As expatriates, we recognize the critical role we play in shaping Lebanon’s future. Our remittances, advocacy, and humanitarian efforts have long been pillars of support for the Lebanese people. Yet, the magnitude of the current crisis demands more than financial aid; it calls for strategic, sustained, and coordinated efforts.

Our position is clear:

    1. Support for Democracy and Reform: We firmly believe in the necessity to protect what remains viable of Lebanon’s special democracy. The Lebanese people deserve leaders who prioritize the nation’s needs above their own political, confessional or financial interests We urge all political factions to set aside their differences and act in the best interest of the country by focusing on the urgency and feasibility on the presidential election which has been dangerously delayed

    2. Election of a Strong, Patriotic, and Independent President: Lebanon needs a leader who embodies patriotism, strength of character, integrity and independence—a president who will prioritize the nation above personal or sectarian interests. Such a leader is essential to secure the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 in its entirety. Every detail of this resolution must be honored, from securing the borders to disarming non-state actors. This is not just a diplomatic obligation but a necessity for Lebanon to regain the national and international respect and confidence needed for the country’s survival and resurgence. The Lebanese Armed Forces and Security Agencies must be the sole bearers of arms on Lebanese soil. No other group has the right or excuse to be armed for any reason. This is a non-negotiable cornerstone of national sovereignty and stability.

    3. Humanitarian Assistance: The humanitarian crisis in Lebanon is dire. Millions lack access to basic necessities, including food, healthcare, and education. We call on international organizations and governments, including the U.S., to bolster humanitarian aid while ensuring transparency and accountability in its distribution.

    4. Diaspora Mobilization: As members of the Lebanese diaspora, we are uniquely positioned to influence public opinion and policy in our adopted countries. We must amplify Lebanon’s plight on the global stage, advocate for sustainable international support, and actively participate in initiatives that drive positive change.

    5. Promoting Unity: Lebanon’s strength lies in its diversity and unity. Sectarian divisions have long been exploited to sow discord, but we must rise above these divides. We envision a Lebanon where unity, tolerance, and mutual respect form the foundation of society.

    6. We are aware and agree that the current Cease fire agreement: is not a final solution to Lebanon’s problems. However, we strongly agree that it should be implemented with courage, sincerity and dignity, to allow the Lebanese people to work the political process within the Taef guidelines starting with the urgently needed election of the unifying Lebanese president.

To the Lebanese people enduring these hardships, we say this: You are not alone. The global Lebanese community stands with you, committed to supporting your aspirations for a brighter future. To our fellow expatriates, let us channel our resources, expertise, and networks into meaningful action.

Sincerely,

Tony Mahfoud

President, American Lebanese Foundation
