Jack F. Tohme, MD

Dr. Tohme was born in Lebanon and, after finishing high school at the International College, studied at the American University of Beirut graduating with B.Sc. in 1970 and M.D. in 1974. He pursued further medical training in the United States and in 1979 returned to A.U.B. to practice and teach at the medical school. In 1984 civil strife in Lebanon and the aftermath of the Israeli invasion forced his final relocation to the U.S. on the faculty of Columbia University. He became president of the Medical Staff at Helen Hayes Hospital then at The Valley Hospital, both affiliates of Columbia. He was also chairman of the Department of Medicine at Valley and Associate Director of Research at Helen Hayes. Dr.Tohme is well published in endocrinology with a focus on osteoporosis. He has authored and co-authored numerous textbook chapters and original articles. He is listed among The Best Doctors in New York and in Who’s Who.

Dr.Tohme has been almost continuously involved in Lebanese American affairs. Within two years of his arrival to New York he was elected to the Board of Directors of the North American Alumni Association of the American University of Beirut and in 1990 he was elected president of that association. He was one of the early members of the Washington based Board of Directors of the American Task Force for Lebanon. He was then selected by Cardinal O’Connor to be a member of an interfaith committee in New York and visited the White House with the Cardinal promoting Lebanese issues. In the mid 1990’s he was offered and seriously considered a top job at the AUB Hospital in Beirut. Lately he became founding president of the Lebanon Society dedicated to energizing the Lebanese expatriates in New York and promoting Lebanese democracy, unity and independence.
